Antarctic Service Medal

Authorized by Congress in 1960 the Antarctica Service Medal to be issued retroactively from January 1946 through today.

Subsequent to June 1973, a minimum of 30 days of sea or shore duty south of latitude of 60 degrees. Personnel who spend the Winter months on the continent of Antarctica wear a clasp inscribed “WINTERED OVER”. 

The medal may also be awarded to U.S. civilians.
