Distinguished Service Medal - Navy
The Navy Distinguished Service Medal was authorized in February 1919 and made retroactive to 6 April 1917.
Designed “to recognize any person serving in the any capacity with the US Navy who distinguished himself/herself by exceptionally meritorious service to the government in a duty with great responsibility”.
Both Army and Navy DSMs were the 3rd highest naval award until 1970 with the establishment of the Defense Distinguished Service Medal.
