Dewey Medal

Under Congressional act in June 1898, in honor of Admiral Dewey’s stunning defeat of the Spanish Navy at Manilla Bay on 1 May 1898, a bronze commemorative medal was issued to US Sailors and Marines who participated in the battle.

The 1,825 medals were contracted with Tiffany & Company and all have the recipients name and rank on the rim and their ship they served on impressed on the reverse.

Ships that qualified for the Dewey Medal were USS Olympia (flag), USRC McCulloch, USS Concord, USS Baltimore, USS Boston, USS Petrel, and USS Raleigh.
